Sunday, August 27, 2017: Santa Monica Beach Trash Report

Dateline: Sunday morning, August 27, 2017... Today I walked the shoreline between Ocean Park and the Santa Monica Pier (aka, Santa Monica South)  AND I also walked to the north side of the pier to check on #beachtrash near the water's edge between the pier and lifeguard tower #15, a distance of some 400 - 500 yards, approximately.

Santa Monica South...

Comment: The City of Santa Monica's tractors and rakes groomed very close to the water's edge today. Much closer than usual, as a matter of fact. So close, indeed, that the tractor was operating
in an area where it is not supposed to operate due to state law that protects microorganisms in the wet sand.

*** The majority of these first set of photos is to illustrate just how close to the water's edge that the City tractors were operated on Sunday, August 27, 2017... well below the high tide line.

The photo below clearly shows that the tractor groomed well below the high tide line and in the area that the City has said it does not operate its tractors due to state law protecting microorganisms that live in the wet sand near the water's edge...

Tractor rake grooming over sea weed below and other wild beach elements said to be protected near the water's edge...

Even though the City operated its tractor and rakes close to the shoreline it is still important for the City to devote human resources to walking near the water's edge to hand pick up #beachtrash left behind, such as is illustrated in the photos below...

More seaweed and kelp caught up by the tractor and rake below... well below the high tide line......

Below, a plastic bag left behind by the tractor and rake... reinforcing why the City needs to ACTUALLY have someone walk the shoreline and hand pick up the #beachtrash..... as I have mentioned and requested on NUMEROUS occasions.....

Santa Monica North (e.g., on the other side of the Santa Monica Pier)...

Broken Glass Alert !...

Above and below, I noticed a bit of a bottle sticking out of the soft sand about 100 yards north of the pier and got down on my knees and discovered a whole broken glass bottle of MODELO® beer.  This brand of beer also happens to be the most heavily discarded brand of beer to be found on the beach in Santa Monica.

note: I was able to carefully pick up the fragments of glass and dispose of them properly in a nearby trash can.

Otherwise, the beach north of the pier was a great deal cleaner than it was the last time I visited here and blogged about it.

Nevertheless, it was obvious that the City could have had someone walk the shoreline and hand pick up #beachtrash north of the Santa Monica Pier...

Back to Santa Monica South.....
