Dear Santa Monica State Beach: Get Well Soon!...

Dear Santa Monica State Beach: GET WELL Soon!
Nice!... A used and soiled diaper at the water's edge!...

Dateline: Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., I walked the beach from the Santa Monica pier to the border with Venice and back to the Santa Monica Pier along the water's edge taking photos and a couple of videos of the uncollected and accumulated #beachtrash near the water's edge that the City of Santa Monica continues to ignore and not hand pick or otherwise dispose of same.

I saw a soiled used diaper right next to the World Famous Santa Monica Pier that was right out in the open and next to beach patrons, empty glass bottles, discarded plastic bottles, balloons, plastic straws, aluminum cans, etc.

I could have filled an extra large plastic garbage bag with it all.... but that is supposed to be the job of the City of Santa Monica as required by the Operating Agreement that it has with the State of California (Cal State Parks).

In any case, here are the photos and videos.  It continues to disappoint that there is no political voice within the City of Santa Monica to address this ongoing public health and safety problem.

Below, at mid frame is a City of Santa Monica sanitation dept. tractor and rake driving back and forth at the middle and back of the beach where there is little to no appreciable #beachtrash. This continues to be the mainstay of #beachtrash collection efforts in the City of Santa Monica and it is very much a dysfunctional approach to the collection and disposal of #beachtrash.  It completely ignores and does nothing to get rid of the majority of #beachtrash which is found near the water's edge.

It does look aesthetically pleasing, however, and it gives the appearance that the beach has been swept of #beachtrash. If the same effort were devoted to the significant and abundant #beachtrash near the water's edge, then the beach could once again be safe for beach patrons.

Below, a good angle on the beach raking with the tractor by the City of Santa Monica at mid beach in the soft dry sand where very few people sit and where there is little to no trash.  This effort is largely ineffectual and is a waste of valuable resources that could be devoted to a handful of employees walking near the water's edge and hand picking up the #beachtrash that accumulates where most beach patrons gather and play.

Below, an empty discarded glass bottle of MODELO® beer that is near the water's edge and has not been collected for disposal by the City of Santa Monica because it does not have any of its staff actually walk near the water's edge and hand pick up the #beachtrash.

Another glass bottle near the water's edge uncollected by the City of Santa Monica because of its lack of civic integrity to do the right thing.

Glass bottle number 3 of the day, below, near the water's edge...

Glass bottle number 4 below...

Below, we pause to watch a surfer catch a nice left...

Below, a display of #beachtrash that was scattered near Lifeguard Tower #29, including glass, plastic aluminum, and cigarette butts.....

Below, dog poop that could and should be picked up by the City of Santa Monica and yet another reason that the City has an obligation to clean up #beachtrash near the water's edge...

#Beachtrash Near The Water's Edge: The Video

Gone surfing √

SCOOBY-DOO! snacks!... as #beachtrash, below...

Another display of #beachtrash scattered near the water's edge and uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

Near Bay St. (aka, Lifeguard Tower #20), I gathered #beachtrash near the water's edge including a discarded mylar balloon that represents our GET WELL message to Santa Monica State Beach in the hopes it will get rid of the #beachtrash near the water's edge...

Look at this beautiful shoreline. It's a shame the City of Santa Monica is too lazy to actually do what it says it does, e.g., walk the beach near the water's edge and hand pick up trash.  No one does this daily or even 3 days a week.

School kids play near the Santa Monica Pier and share the near water's edge area of the beach with #beachtrash uncollected by the City of Santa Monica, including glass bottles, plastic container and aluminum cans, as well as storm debris...

I tell ya, this beach has gone to the dogs...

... and a used soiled diaper!... near the water's edge and right next to the World Famous Santa Monica Pier!...  #Disgusting #Unsanitary #Unsafe... and there is a large group of school kids right near by.  This is clearly a public health and safety issue.

Used Diaper On Santa Monica Beach: The Video

Below, is this healthy and sanitary?...

School children, below, at left... who are going to have to partake of this natural resource with all of the #beachtrash near the water's edge...

It is long overdue for the City of Santa Monica to devote the resources which it already has to walking near the water's edge and hand picking up the #beachtrash.  Instead of the useless and monotonous tractor and rake routine, a handful of employees could get more done in less time
if they actually walked near the water's edge and hand picked up the #beachtrash.

Respectfully submitted,
