Santa Monica Beach Trash Report: Pillow Talk

Dateline: Thursday morning, March 23, 2017... I began today's audit at Lifeguard Tower #28 which is in the Ocean Park area about a mile south of the Santa Monica Pier.  I walked out to the shoreline and then proceeded down to Tower #29 just before the border with Venice, California. Then I walked toward the Santa Monica Pier and took photos and a video of the #beachtrash near the water's edge that remains uncollected by the City of Santa Monica because the City does not either daily or regularly have any of its sanitation staff walk near the water's edge and hand pick up the #beachtrash. This is nothing new, of course, because the City continues to engage in its dysfunctional approach to cleaning up trash on the beach by relying on the use of a tractor towing a rake which does not reach to the water's edge.

As previously stated and observed on many, many occasions the City does not either daily or regularly clean up the #beachtrash near the water's edge.  This morning, for example, I observed two ladies on their own picking up beach trash near the water's edge along with me.  Later by the Santa Monica Pier at 10:15 a.m. approximately, I noticed a group of school children and their adult supervisors on the beach picking up #beachtrash.  Therefore, it was the two ladies, myself, and the school kids that cleaned up more #beachtrash than did the City of Santa Monica today near the water's edge.

In any case, here are the photos and the video.  Take a look at the video which shows at how truly disgusting it is at the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain outlet on the beach right in front of luxury hotels, CASA DEL MAR and SHUTTERS.  I don't imagine that these hotels or the City will be promoting this shocking display of #beachtrash and hazardous waste.

Below, an establishing shot out front of Lifeguard Tower #29 at the southern end of Santa Monica State Beach...

At this point, I turned around and headed back toward the Santa Monica Pier taking photos and a video...

Below, a photo entitled: "Pillow Talk"...  Maybe the City of Santa Monica just did not see this abandoned pillow out in the middle of the beach.....  either that or their staff just do not give a hoot and just ignore it like much of the #beachtrash near the water's edge...

Below, is the art installation I created to publicize the continued neglect by the City of Santa Monica with respect to #beachtrash, esp. near the water's edge...

Below, a bag full of trash picked up by a volunteer from out of town who decided to take a walk along the shoreline this morning and pick up #beachtrash.....  Too bad the City of Santa Monica is not as engaged and motivated as this out of town visitor...

... and there she goes on her way toward Venice collecting more #beachtrash...

Lots of natural debris was again observed as it was last week in our previous blog post.  The City does not pick this up either.

Below, a second art installation (near Lifeguard Tower #24) of #beachtrash that I created to focus attention on the City of Santa Monica's continued failure to pick up #beachtrash near the water's edge on either a daily or regular basis.

A third and smaller installation of #beachtrash of waste that I picked up near Bay St. (aka, Lifeguard Tower #20) and out front of luxury hotel, CASA DEL MAR...

A broken and torn aluminum can half buried in the sand with very sharp edges...

Below, additional #beachtrash left uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

Arriving at the Pico-Kenter storm drain, we encounter a very disturbing amount of #beachtrash and hazardous waste.

Welcome to Santa Monica State Beach... Let's play ball!

Below, disgusting scuzzy water that is very likely a source of hazardous waste, which remains unaddressed and not removed by the City of Santa Monica...

Below, in the next four (4) photos is an absolutely disgusting display of #beachtrash and hazardous waste directly in front of luxury hotel, CASA DEL MAR.  You have to wonder if the owners and management think that the hotel taxes that they collect should be paying for this to be cleaned up by the City of Santa Monica...

And if that wasn't disgusting enough, have a look at this video of this #beachtrash and hazardous waste out in front of CASA DEL MAR and SHUTTERS...

Below, a fourth installation of more #beachtrash that I collected near the water's edge...

Below, a discarded plastic bottle of CLEAR EYES® eye solution..... too bad the City of Santa Monica can't use this so they could more clearly see all the #beachtrash that they continue to ignore...

Above and below, our final load of #beachtrash collected near the water's edge and adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier...

Last but not least, a group of school children, below, with their adult supervisors collect #beachtrash near the water's edge by the Santa Monica Pier... Yet another example of citizens doing what the City of Santa Monica does not do on either a daily or regular basis.

The City of Santa Monica continues to avoid cleaning up the #beachtrash near the water's edge on either a daily or regular basis. This is being done with full knowledge and apparent acceptance to date by the State of California (California State Parks), which I have contacted and corresponded with due to the obvious concerns about public safety caused by the City of Santa Monica's failure to clean up the #beachtrash near the water's edge and which the City is obliged to do in its Operating Agreement  with the State of California in connection with Santa Monica State Beach.

Our goal remains to convince the City of Santa Monica to actually hand pick up #beachtrash near the water's edge that they continue to avoid doing even though it is their obligation to do so.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Santa Monica business owner
