The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Santa Monica #BeachTrash Report, Saturday, January 14, 2017

Dateline: Saturday mid day, January 14, 2017 along Santa Monica Beach between the Santa Monica Pier and south to the infamous Pico-Kenter Storm Drain and on to Bay St. and back.....

In terms of the #BeachTrash observed today, we categorize it as THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY.

First off, THE GOOD:

The beach along the water's edge was remarkably clean between the Santa Monica Pier and the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain, which from past experience and observation is typically the result of some volunteer group like HEAL THE BAY sending its volunteers down to hand pick up the #beachtrash.
I do not know who cleaned this approximate one-quarter mile stretch of the shoreline but they did a nice job. I sincerely doubt that it was anyone from the City of Santa Monica, however.  Here are the photos of this 1/4 mile stretch of beach which illustrates how it should look all of the time, e.g., pristine and beautiful!...

THE BAD:

Below, I observed this seagull picking away at the piece of plastic before moving away as I approached to take this photo...  This is how wildlife continues to be endangered and the City of Santa Monica does not have the integrity to assign even one (1) person to hand pick up this obviously visible and notorious #beachtrash!...  Meanwhile, Execs in City Hall continue to collect their $200K plus annual salaries.....

THE UGLY... The infamous Pico-Kenter Storm Drain outfall was particularly disgusting, unsanitary and hazardous today. Based on our previous observations, there is very little chance that any of this #beachtrash will EVER be picked up and disposed of by the City of Santa Monica...  AND it is all RIGHT OUT IN FRONT OF the luxury hotels SHUTTERS and CASA DEL MAR...  what a nice sight for their guests.....

Just look at this disgusting and unsanitary #beachtrash RIGHT OUT IN FRONT of both SHUTTERS and CASA DEL MAR!...

And along the water's edge, there is more obvious and notoriously visible #beachtrash that could easily be picked up if the City of Santa Monica had even ONE (1) person out here hand picking it up!...  All those $200K plus salaries must be why the City cannot seem to budget even one person to pick up this daily #beachtrash along the water's edge.  x-ref: #shameful #irresponsible #hazardous.

Meanwhile... "Say hello to my little friend!"...

It's not as if this #beachtrash is not visible?!...  The City just DOES NOT CARE enough about this amazing natural resource of ours, e.g., the beach, the shoreline, the ocean... to pick it up and dispose of it as they should and as they say that they do... which, of course, is a continuing and ongoing #misrepresentation by the City...

Heck, I would pick it up if the City paid me to do it.  I have picked up so much #beachtrash along the water's edge on my own time as a member of the public and as a volunteer without compensation and without participation or help from the City of Santa Monica that I simply got fed up doing it. Why should I continue to pick up #beachtrash when the City doesn't do it?!... and it is their job to do so and the City represents that they do so!...  x-ref: Op-Ed.

Finally, I would like to remind the audience that our goal remains to get the City of Santa Monica to do the job that they say they are doing, e.g., actually send out their sanitation staff to walk along the water's edge and hand pick up the #beachtrash on a regular basis.  The City Attorney, for example, makes over $300K per year and he cannot get this done?!...  The failure to dispose of this #beachtrash certainly represents a continuing liability risk for the City.  Is the Mayor asleep?  Is the City Council awake?  What a pathetic joke and obscene insult to the citizens of Santa Monica and the beach going public that is solicited and encouraged to come to the beach in the City of Santa Monica.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
