Zero Effort...

MODELO® as #beachtrash...

COKE® as #beachtrash

The #SCUZ pool out front of CASA DEL MAR...

Dateline: Saturday, January 21, 2017 along the shore line of Santa Monica Beach between the Santa Monica Pier and south to Bay St.  Our mission today, as before, was to audit the #beachtrash along the water's edge and sadly we once again must report evidence of ZERO EFFORT by the City of Santa Monica to pick up and/or dispose of any #beachtrash along the water's edge today.  The level of #beachtrash is astounding and it continues to represent a public health and safety threat.  Meanwhile, the City of Santa Monica cannot seem to get even one (1) employee to hand pick up #beachtrash along the water's edge.

Above and below, an ultimate frisbee tournament which hundreds of participants and multiple games both north and south of the Santa Monica Pier.... Huge turnout.  Lots of people having lots of fun!...

Meanwhile down along the water's edge it is a different story where #beachtrash is king...

Below, construction debris with rusty nails included... maybe the City of Santa Monica sanitation dept. staff just didn't see it?!...    because they didn't go near the shore line today!...

A glass bottle below left behind or washed up on shore... in either case, no one from the City of Santa Monica bothered to pick it up.  Why?!  Because the City does NOT care enough about the #beachtrash along the water's edge to do something about it.

Lots of plastic debris spoiling the shoreline... as usual, and representing a continuing threat to the wildlife, esp. birds that pick at it and eat it.....

The infamous Pico-Kenter Storm Drain was filthy and wretched as usual, representing a continuing public health and safety risk, not to mention a continuing nuisance and eyesore for luxury hotels, SHUTTERS and CASA DEL MAR in the background below...

Additional Ultimate Frisbee games ongoing below at mid beach on the soft dry sand.....

Not a very attractive sight, below... as a layer of scuz floats out front of both SHUTTERS and CASA DEL MAR...

In the three photos immediately below, there is an additional scuz pool floating out front of CASA DEL MAR that has got to be a hazardous waste threat that remains unaddressed by the City of Santa Monica.  This will not be cleaned up but will instead most likely drain out to the ocean, particularly with a large rain storm predicted for tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017...  In the meantime, the City of Santa Monica buries it's head in the sand and ignores this public health and safety threat...

Pico-Kenter Storm Drain Hazardous Waste & Beach Trash: The Video

     https://youtu.be/EMwYFC2q0oM

Below, all these birds are at risk because of the substantial #beachtrash lining the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain that the City of Santa Monica does not clean up and/or dispose of.  Does the State of California know that the City is not cleaning up the #beachtrash on our state beach here in Santa Monica?

Isn't it Ironic?!... A fine tooth comb discarded on the beach... In any other city fortunate to have such a beautiful natural resource as the beach in Santa Monica, it is probable that #beachtrash would be cleaned up with a fine tooth comb as a public health and safety precaution, not to mention a government obligation as the steward of this astounding natural resource... Don't ya think!...

CASA DEL MAR should just go ahead and hire day laborers to clean up this #beachtrash since the City of Santa Monica is not going to do it and then CDM should consider deducting the expense from the substantial hotel taxes that they pay to the City of Santa Monica... Just a thought.....

Below, #beachtrash is at least one thing that does NOT go better with Coke...

Horrendous scuz pool of #beachtrash and hazardous waste out front of CASA DEL MAR and SHUTTERS.....

In 2017, thus far, "nothing has changed" in terms of the City of Santa Monica doing its part in the collection and/or disposal of #beachtrash along the water's edge and at the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain.
Meanwhile, it's clean as a whistle on the grounds surrounding City Hall..... Go figure?!.....

At some point, we are hopeful that an organization like HEAL THE BAY, THE BAY FOUNDATION, or L.A. WATERKEEPER will step up and actively lobby the City to do what it is supposed to be doing and which they are obligated to do as the municipal steward responsible for taking care of Santa Monica State Beach.  Indeed, the State of California may have to step up and conduct its own audit of the City's failure to clean up the #beachtrash along the water's edge.

I am all for a team effort in getting this accomplished, e.g., local businesses, environmental non-profit groups, citizens AND most importantly, the City of Santa Monica... all working together to clean up and dispose of the ongoing public health and safety threat that the substantial accumulation of #beachtrash continues to represent.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Santa Monica business owner
