Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, Santa Monica Beach Trash Report: The Horror, The Sequel

A soiled/used diaper uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...
Dateline: Sunday morning, Nov. 6, 2016 at approximately 8:30 a.m. we walked from the Santa Monica Pier south toward Ocean Park.  At just past 1 pm we returned to Bay St. and walked back toward the Santa Monica Pier observing that there was NO collection of any #beachtrash by the City of Santa Monica during the interim...  Indeed, we observed a six pack of CORONA® glass beer bottles along the water's edge adjacent to lifeguard tower #20 at Bay St. and directly out front of the Hotel, Casa Del Mar, that had been discarded over night and these same glass bottles were there this morning at 8:30 a.m. and again just past 1 pm when we returned.  It is absolutely astonishing that the City of Santa Monica is so neglectful of its most valuable natural resource and does not clean up the beach at the water's edge.

Below, a soiled/used diaper lays uncollected on the sand out front of Lifeguard Tower #16...

Below, just look at how beautiful the ocean is and the breaking wave along this stretch of beach that the City of Santa Monica places so little value upon that it does not make sure that its staff walk along the water's edge and hand pick up the #beachtrash as it says that it does.

After arriving at Ocean Park, I continued down to Venice to take a swim and came back about 4 1/2 hours later to see if the #beachtrash, esp. the glass bottles at the water's edge by Bay St. had by chance been picked up by the City of Santa Monica.  No luck there, unfortunately, as the following photos and video illustrate...

Below, the soiled/used diaper we observed over 4 hours ago is still here on the beach for the beach patrons to have to avoid...

It is obvious that the City of Santa Monica cares very little about this natural resource even though they promote the heck out of the beach and the pier to draw visitors to the City... and yet just look at the beach by the water's edge: glass bottles, plastic bottles, waste products, soiled diapers... it is absolutely shocking and disgusting.  This neglect continues in spite of the City having specific notice that its sanitation dept. is not walking along the water's edge and hand picking up this #beachtrash.  This is more than simple neglect at this point.  The failure to provide a clean and safe beach at the water's edge by the City of Santa Monica is, in my opinion, a continuing act of gross negligence and represents a serious liability risk for the City.  It is absolutely remarkable that the City lacks the civic integrity and character to clean up its beaches along the water's edge where people that visit the beach principally congregate.

Attn: City of Santa Monica!  PLEASE clean up the beach at the water's edge!  This should be a priority instead of a chore that remains neglected.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Santa Monica business owner
