Santa Monica #BeachTrash Report: Wed., Dec. 7, 2016

Dateline: Wednesday morning, December 7, 2016 at 9:20 a.m. and thereafter, I walked along the water's edge from the world famous Santa Monica Pier south to the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain, as well as north of the pier. During this time period I observed a great deal of uncollected #beachtrash along the water's edge on both sides of the pier.

Fortunately, I also observed a group of college students from a biology class at Santa Monica College who arrived on the beach at the water's edge to collect the #beachtrash.  Without the help of volunteers from Santa Monica College, Santa Monica High School, as well as organizations like HEAL THE BAY, the water's edge would not get cleaned of #beachtrash since the City of Santa Monica continues to not hand pick up the #beachtrash along the water's edge either regularly and certainly not daily.

Here are the photos and videos that I took this morning which show just how much #beachtrash goes uncollected by the City of Santa Monica, as well as the efforts of the SMC students this morning who did clean up #beachtrash along the water's edge.

doing something which the City of Santa Monica cannot seem to get its staff to do even though
a City spokesperson has stated that City staff do walk the water's edge and hand pick up #beachtrash, but which our multiple audits reveal to simply not be the case.  Instead, the City relies on volunteers that include children, teenagers, college students and organizations like HEAL THE BAY to pick up the abundant slack and #beachtrash that the City neglects to do itself on either a regular or daily basis.

Another stunning day at the beach with a few surfers out enjoying the surf... too bad beach patrons continue to be subjected to #beachtrash along the water's edge because the City of Santa Monica cannot seem to get even one person to regularly walk along the water's edge and hand pick up #beachtrash...

Below are several photos of the infamous Pico-Kenter storm drain which remains polluted and full of #beachtrash one week since our last audit of this area of the beach on Wed., Nov. 30th.  All of this polluted water and #beachtrash is directly in front of two very high profile hotels, namely, Shutters On The Beach, and Casa Del Mar.  It is absolutely remarkable that the City of Santa Monica does not clean up this area when these two hotels account for a great deal of tax revenue for the City of Santa Monica.  The City has a sanitation department.  So why can't they get down there and clean this up?
My opinion is that no one wants to get their hands dirty.  That is my opinion based on multiple audits of #beachtrash in Santa Monica.  The City continues to neglect the water's edge in terms of cleaning up #beachtrash and it is both unreasonable and unsanitary.  The health, safety and welfare of the public continues to be at risk and the City lacks the integrity to make sure that the #beachtrash is cleaned up at the water's edge either regularly or daily by its staff.

The North Side of the Santa Monica Pier is also cluttered with #beachtrash along the water's edge that continues to not be collected and/or disposed of by the City of Santa Monica... and here are the photos to prove it...

It is both remarkable and pathetic that the City of Santa Monica cannot get one person on the city payroll to walk along the water's and hand pick up #beachtrash like the large discarded glass bottle of Tequila below!...  But you can be sure that the City of Santa Monica will be using social media, e.g., Twitter, etc. to encourage the public to come to the beach and visit the town's restaurants, etc.

Below, we observe a HEAL THE BAY tent set up near the parking lot and we can only hope that they will be sending out volunteers to clean up the #beachtrash along the water's edge north of the pier... because no one on the payroll of the City of Santa Monica is going to do it!...

Below, an empty discarded plastic yogurt container on the wet sand adjacent to the world famous Santa Monica Pier..... right smack out in the open and uncollected by the City of Santa Monica because it lacks the civic integrity to clean up the #beachtrash along the water's edge in spite of the fact that the City rakes in exorbitant beach parking fees and other taxes.

The City of Santa Monica should be ashamed of itself for not having the civic integrity to make sure that it's staff walks the water's edge daily to pick up the #beachtrash that accumulates each and every day.

Our hope is that the City of Santa Monica will address this issue immediately and clean up the #beachtrash on a daily basis along the water's edge so that beach patrons can enjoy the beach without having to be exposed to the ongoing health and safety risks posed by said #beachtrash.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Santa Monica business owner
