Sunday, August 13, 2017: Santa Monica Beach Trash Report

The Highlights, er, lowlights...

Dateline: Sunday morning, August 13, 2017. Today I started at the northern edge of Santa Monica and walked down to the Santa Monica Pier and kept going all the way to Ocean Park at Lifeguard Tower #26.  Along the way I observed a tremendous amount of #beachtrash near the water's edge that was uncollected and NOT disposed of by the City of Santa Monica, including multiple glass bottles, multiple aluminum cans, lots of plastic and paper debris.  NONE of which was hand picked and disposed of by the sanitation dept. staff of the City of Santa Monica that its Mayor has recently stated clean up #beachtrash EVERY DAY.  Today's photos illustrate exactly how false is this continuing representation by the City of Santa Monica.

The Beach Club, shown below, is adjacent to where I began today's #beachtrash audit as I walked along the shoreline toward the Santa Monica Pier...

So much #beachtrash, in fact, near the water's edge it's got me feeling meloncholy...

Above and below, it's also sure nice how well the City of Santa Monica maintains the fencing surrounding the wildlife protection area...

Arriving at Sorrento beach adjacent to the Jonathan Club and lifeguard tower #8, I notice a bunch of discarded aluminum cans and other #beachtrash along the berm near the water's edge TOTALLY IGNORED by the City of Santa Monica...

Stick at #Fork in it, this beach is #Filthy!...

Above and below, the line in the sand along the berm near the water's edge reveals where the tractors
run parallel to shore. It is the area between the water's edge and the raked sand that is where the City of Santa Monica does not daily hand pick up and dispose of #beachtrash, despite the City's misrepresentations to the contrary.  The photos speak for themselves, however, and prove that the City does not, in fact, hand pick up and dispose of #beachtrash near the water's edge EVERY DAY.

Just look at all of this #beachtrash below the high tide line and the berm that the City has NOT bothered itself to clean up!... It is simply left there for everyone that comes to the beach today to have to avoid  That is what you get for paying for beachside parking in the City of Santa Monica... a beach filled with #beachtrash.   Welcome to Santa Monica State Beach!...

Below, a beach lifeguard working the tower (1550) next to the Santa Monica Pier is observed picking up #beachtrash adjacent to his tower.  #Beachtrash uncollected and ignored by the City of Santa Monica that is supposed to be picking it up and disposing of it.  The City should be replaced and another organization found by the State of California (Cal. State Parks) to handle the collection and disposal of #beachtrash near the water's edge because the City obviously chooses not to do so and these photos prove that the City does NOT hand pick up #beachtrash near the water's edge every day.

Welcome to Santa Monica State Beach. Please enjoy all the #beachtrash which the City of Santa Monica is too lazy and unconcerned about to pick up and dispose of...

Under the Santa Monica Pier and near the water's edge.....

On the other side of the Santa Monica Pier (south side)...

Beautiful, huh?!...  Yes, that is the world famous Santa Monica Pier and that is the what it really looks like on a Sunday morning.  You won't see this photo offered up by the City of Santa Monica in its social media posts...

Last but not least, I returned at 1:35 pm to where I observed  the multiple empty cans of MODELO® beer at 10 a.m. north of the Santa Monica Pier and adjacent to lifeguard tower #12 and this #beachtrash was still there and remained uncollected and NOT disposed of by the City of Santa Monica!...

The City of Santa Monica continues to avoid its obligation to clean up #beachtrash near the water's edge and this failure continues to represent a threat to public health and safety.

Additionally, the State of California continues to bury its head in the sand and does not seem to care if the City cleans up the #beachtrash near the water's edge.

In other words, both the City of Santa Monica and the State of California are individually and collectively to blame for the failure to clean up #beachtrash daily near the water's edge along Santa Monica State Beach.  An ongoing failure that continues to threaten the public health and safety.

Both the State of California AND the City of Santa Monica can and should do better!
