Santa Monica Beach Trash Report: Thursday, April 6, 2017

Dateline:  Thursday, April 6, 2017, late afternoon at and after 4:15 pm, I walked along the shoreline between the Santa Monica Pier and south to the border with Venice at Lifeguard Tower #29. Here are the photos plus a video of the #beachtrash near the water's edge uncollected and/or not disposed of by the City of Santa Monica.

right smack dab next to the Santa Monica Pier...

... a used and soiled diaper left uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

the beach right next to the Santa Monica Pier was absolutely filthy with #beachtrash...

a bunch of empty glass CORONA® beer bottles right out in front of luxury hotels SHUTTERS and CASA DEL MAR left uncollected and/or not disposed of by the City of Santa Monica...

Above and below, a large piece of wood debris that I hauled out of the ocean so it would not hit anyone playing in the water...

Below, a dead bird near the water's edge adjacent to Bay St. and in front of luxury hotel, CASA DEL MAR.... left uncollected and/or disposed of by the City of Santa Monica..... for the simple reason that the City does not have anyone that inspects the shoreline for #beachtrash and it's collection either daily or regularly.

Welcome to Santa Monica State Beach!...

and here is a literal (and proverbial) "yellow ribbon" to tie around all this #beachtrash...

Above and below, #highclass #beachtrash at Santa Monica State Beach makes an appearance with an expensive bottle of wine discarded by some #lowclass beach patron...

Too bad this toy action figure of a soldier (that I found in the sand; x-ref: #score) isn't real so he could help us clean up all this #beachtrash...

and the balance of the photos were shot during my return trip back to the Santa Monica Pier...

Above and below , I found two (2) separate and partially crushed and very dangerously sharp discarded aluminum cans that I placed in a trash container... something that the City of Santa Monica should have done!

I propped all of these discarded bottles, plus a can, near Bay St. and out front of CASA DEL MAR up in the sand so that the City could more easily see them and pick them up and dispose of them hopefully... should the City just happen to have anyone paying attention to the #beachtrash near the water's edge...

Glass Bottles & Beach Trash: The Video

     https://youtu.be/erFn7h3N_No

just look how gorgeous this beach is!...  you would think that the City of Santa Monica would do a better job at cleaning up the #beachtrash because this is such a wonderful natural resource and a natural resource that the City actively advertises and promotes to the general public as a safe and clean place to visit with family, children, babies and friends...

and yet this is what the beach REALLY LOOKS LIKE at Santa Monica State Beach: beach trash, dead birds,  sharp objects, etc. et al...

It is remarkable that the City of Santa Monica does not daily and/or regularly collect and dispose of the significant daily accumulation of #beachtrash near the water's edge.  Not to do so violates the City's obligation to do so and as the City has contracted to do with the State of California (Calif. State Parks) in its Operating Agreement.  The failure to clean up #beachtrash poses a significant public health and safety risk which is a separate liability risk for the City and which it is absolutely unconscionable not to address and resolve.

Someone is going to get hurt because of all of this #beachtrash and it will likely be a member of the general public invited to come to Santa Monica State Beach or it could be a first responder such as a beach lifeguard, firefighter/paramedic or police officer.  And it could be avoided easily by the City.

It is hoped that other members of the public and Santa Monica residents and/or businesses will communicate with the City of Santa Monica their disappointment in the City not actively cleaning up the #beachtrash near the water's edge on a daily or regular basis.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Santa Monica business owner
