Friday, October 28, 2016: Santa Monica Beach Trash Report

Look what the tide left behind?!...  We post it here to try to cushion the blow of all the photos of #beachtrash to follow...
Dateline: Friday morning around 11 a.m. along the beach at the water's edge in Santa Monica as we walk from the Santa Monica Pier to Ocean Park and back taking photos, plus a video of the contaminated water being released into the ocean from the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain as the result of the light rain we experienced over night...

So far so good... well, at least it looks good from far.....

Once you get down to the water's edge, however, it is a different story altogether in terms of the abundance of #beachtrash... Below, there is a piece of paper/cardboard in the foreground that has been there now for three (3) days without being disposed of by the City of Santa Monica. Why you might ask?!...  The answer is because the City does not, in fact, hand pick and/or otherwise dispose of the #beach trash along the water's edge.

A discarded paper plate below which we use here to serve up another example of #beachtrash left uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

We saw this same HOT DOG ON A STICK cup yesterday and the day before...

The next two photos once again illustrate where the City sanitation vehicles with their rakes stop cleaning the sand.  The heavily trampled area immediately adjacent to the water's edge is not cleaned.

These travel brochures below were in the same place yesterday near the water's edge and remain uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

A handy discarded plastic spoon below that also allows us to serve up some more #beachtrash photos...

Wine and cigarettes at the beach...

The skies are starting to clear and it could be a sunny day at the beach after all...

This partial paper cup below was also on the beach yesterday and remains uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

The plastic cup below was on the beach yesterday...

Below, the same baby bottle from yesterday is still on the beach...

Just a few feet from the water's edge and only a few feet from where the City tractors and rakes stop... and yet still this #beachtrash remains uncollected by the City of Santa Monica.  Why?!... Because both the staff responsible for cleaning this up and City Hall just don't seem to care...

Orange you glad that I am documenting all this #beachtrash?!...

Apparently, MIKE'S GARLIC TROUT BAIT cannot seem to catch a City employee hand picking up trash even though this glass bottle of trout bait has been here for three days running.....

And below, this paper cup has also been here on the beach now for three days and left uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

Below, this same #beachtrash was present the past two days...

This piece of scrap wood with sharp edges has also been here on the beach for three days plus...

Looking down towards Ocean Park and Venice...

Below, alas the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain...

So just how filthy is it on the beach in Santa Monica?  It is so filthy that someone decided to put a bow on it!...

Stunning view along the water's edge looking back toward the Santa Monica Pier... Why doesn't the City of Santa Monica care about removing the #beachtrash along the water's edge?!...

Dead bird on the sand out front of Lifeguard Tower #28... It will likely remain here for quite some time since the City does not clean up near the water's edge...

Broken, shredded and very sharp empty discarded can of MODELO beer found partially buried in the sand... waiting for someone to step on it.....

Another dead bird just south of lifeguard tower #20... This will also likely not be picked up and/or disposed of by the City of Santa Monica.  Why?  Because there is no one from the City who either regularly or daily walks this area or drives a vehicle looking to pick up #beachtrash and other unsanitary debris...

Last but not least, the bottle of Fireball Whiskey below was also there yesterday and remains uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

Well, there you have it. TGIF...  Friday on the beach in #Santa Monica... where the #beachtrash meets the sea, including dead birds, plastic bottles, glass bottles, broken glass, plastic bags, paper products, etc. et al... none of which is likely to be collected and/or otherwise disposed of by the City of Santa Monica based on our multiple month and multiple daily audits...

If you are as disgusted and disappointed as I am about the City of Santa Monica not devoting reasonable and even minimal resources to cleaning up the beach along the water's edge, please contact the City and let them know what you think of this ongoing civic negligence.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Santa Monica business owner
