Santa Monica Beach Trash Report: Sat., Oct. 29, 2016

Dead cormorant right beside the Santa Monica Pier below the high tide line...
Dateline: Saturday morning around 11 a.m. along Santa Monica Beach adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier.  We walked along the beach from the Pier down to Bay St. and back taking photos and videos of all the #beachtrash that the City of Santa Monica continues to ignore and not hand pick or otherwise collect and dispose of.

Below, a dead cormorant right next to the Santa Monica Pier below the high tide line and just a few feet from beach patrons, including children...  "Welcome to Santa Monica Beach!..."

Below, glass bottles left uncollected by the City of Santa Monica...

The two photos immediately below show the very same bottle of Fireball Whiskey that we have seen here on the beach the past 3 days now!...

It's past 11 a.m., when exactly is the City of Santa Monica going to clean up all this trash beside lifeguard tower #17?...

This burned piece of wood has been here on the beach for at least 2 weeks now...

It's been 3 days now that this washed up seat cushion has been here on the beach without the City of Santa Monica picking it up and disposing of it...

These bottles and cans below have been here for at least 3 days now...

The very same Orange we saw yesterday is still here today...

The baby bottle below has been there for over 3 days now...

This broken piece of wood below has been here on the beach now for over 3 days...

Below are a series of photos of the trash just above the high tide line at the Pico-Kenter storm drain that the City has not cleaned up in the past 48 hours since the last rain...  What are they waiting for?!...

This photo below shows just how stunning and beautiful it is here by the shoreline and you have to wonder why the City of Santa Monica does not treat this beach with the respect it deserves and clean up the trash along the water's edge as the City has said as recently as August 19th that it does do, but which we now know to be false.

Below, a third dead bird wrapped up in some blue colored cloth...

It is shocking that no one from the City of Santa Monica has observed this and removed it from the beach!  I know why, of course.  Because no one from the City walks along the water's edge hand picking up #beachtrash, etc.

Back to where we started by the Santa Monica Pier we observe a young father with his infant child just a few feet away from the dead seagull (dead bird no. 2 of the day)...

The enormity of the #beachtrash is beyond staggering by the water's edge and the City of Santa Monica continues to ignore it's civic obligation to clean up the #beachtrash, including dead birds, plastic bottles, glass bottles, paper products, plastic bags, cigarette butts, etc.

The City of Santa Monica is on specific notice that the Sanitation Dept. is not hand picking up the #beachtrash along the water's edge.  There is a liability risk for the City for this continued neglect, in my opinion.

The City should assign two employees each day to walk the water's edge in the morning by 9 a.m. to hand pick up the #beachtrash, including dead birds and the like for one hour and pay them for two hours, which will give them some time to clean up and get the sand out of their shoes.

We will continue our efforts to expose the #beachtrash uncollected by the City of Santa Monica. Let's hope that the City gets its act together before a member of the public gets hurt and sues the City for negligence.

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Santa Monica business owner
